Today as a representative of Tibetan Buddhism and in particular the Karma Kagyu Lineage which has a 900 year history I would like to take the opportunity of this World Parliament of Religions convened in the great Canadian city of Toronto, to offer my greetings to all the guests, friends and Dharma friends gathered. This assembly is particularly meaningful because the leaders of many world religions have all gathered here to discuss how we should think about the needs of the world and how we might through our own religions offer a service to the world.

But I am very disappointed that I am unable to attend in person because of my physical condition. So first of all I want to apologize for that. Next I would like to take the opportunity to say a few words. In this world there are different types of people, those who have faith in religion and those who do not. But there is a great need for religion. The reason is that for religious people religious traditions are indispensable for increasing the fundamental value of human life; for increasing love and forgiveness and open-mindedness.

I think that religion is not merely a custom or tradition we should have faith and devotion for. It is something we must use in this life to bring out our ability in this life to bring change in a positive direction. This was the intention of the founders of our religions. And I think it is important for us to preserve this tradition.

These days in the world there are many who take the name of religion and use it to increase strife and conflict. For this reason I think it is crucial for religious people to gather in order to discuss with each-other how we can spread the true real meaning of religion in order to protect sentient beings from suffering in a concrete manner. Because many people use religion, but explain it incorrectly, strife and conflict are on the increase in the world. This is why it is especially important for us to promote the true understanding, and practice the true nature of religion。I also believe that it is important for religious leaders to maintain good personal relations with each-other。The reason is that I have been to many interfaith gatherings; but merely increasing dialogue during a conference is not enough。What I think we need is good loving mutual connections in our daily lives。Only when we can do that will religious people have the ability to deal with the many difficulties we face。

In the 21st century, one important issue we must deal with is the environment. Our environmental problems are growing increasingly severe. Global warming is getting increasingly dangerous. But the results of research that science has done and the warnings that they give, do not help us on their own. The lifestyles and livelihood we human beings all lead have a strong impact on climate change. The way we think about our human lifestyle must be developed and improved. People need to control their limitless desires, and religious teachings are extremely beneficial and are necessary for doing that.

For these reasons, we religious figures must work in concert with scientists in order to have a greater effect toward preserving the environment. With scientists are providing education and information and religious leaders providing methods to change the motivation, I see that it is important for us to work together and make efforts on behalf of the environment.

Likewise in this world many of those who have faith and religion are women. And it is the responsibility of us religious leaders to protect their value, freedom and rights. There are many issues of gender equality in our society, and many religious issues that effect the rights of women.

From one perspective many of these issues are societal customs, that are not particularly connected to the actual meaning of the religion. But many of these cultural and societal habits come along together with religion, and we consider these cultural and social habits to be part of the religion. This has lead to many limitations and setbacks to women’s freedom, happiness and rights. These issues are certainly something we must explain clearly.

It is not impossible, that sometimes there may be religious teachings, that might need to be modified to fit with the times. Or that we might need to use our intelligence to explain them in new ways.

There are several such issues in Buddhism, for example: These are issues where it is the responsibility of religious people, especially of religious leaders to protect with great courage and great strength of mind the rights and freedoms of women, whether they have faith in religion or not.

In brief, we religious figures should not only uphold and preserve our own religious tradition. We also have the responsibility to increase peace and happiness in the world. We must not forget that we all live together on this earth. What often happens instead is that we only think about what is happening within our own religious circle. As our feeling that we all live together on this globe grows weaker, for this reason, we must never forget the problems that face us as human beings. We all live on this earth, and our happiness and suffering are interconnected. We have them together.

The world today is in an information era; the time in which we are all growing closer. We ourselves and others are not so far apart as we ordinarily think. We are part of others, others are part of us. We are all mutually responsible for one another and profoundly connected to each other. It is my prayer and hope that we all work together hand in hand for the future of the world and for the sake of all living beings - not just humans.

Finally, I would like to express my thanks to all my friends who are attending this parliament, and once again offer my apologies for not being able to attend.“

Bamboo

Bamboo
